Accurate determination of water quality parameters away from any laboratory requires the use of portable instruments. Most of these meters use electrochemical methods for a number of properties, e.g. pH, electrical conductivity and redox potential. Some parameters can only be determined by optical methods, e.g. turbidity. The analysis of trace elements is usually carried out photometrically which requires a photometer.
